TAMBARAM: A protest by residents of M.G.R Nagar, Akkarai, near Sholinganallur, on Monday against a new IMFL outlet of TASMAC in their locality turned violent with some of them assaulting the staff of the store and damaging a few cartons of liquor bottles.

Officials at the Kancheepuram district unit of Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) said the shop (No.4178) was earlier functioning near Five Rathas in Mamallapuram.

Due to poor patronage, the absence of an attached bar and owing to frequent theft, they decided to shift it elsewhere.

They identified a location on Kalaignar Karunanidhi Salai connecting Rajiv Gandhi Salai at Sholinganallur and East Coast Road in Akkarai.

On Monday morning, about 100 residents of M.G.R.Nagar, mostly women, assembled outside the shop and raised slogans against its opening, stating it would create a nuisance in the otherwise peaceful locality.

A section of them slapped the staff, including M.Sankaran, the store supervisor.

They also pulled out a few cartons containing liquor bottles and broke them.

After personnel from the Neelangarai police station arrived, the group dispersed.

Five men were taken to the police station for questioning.

Police made it clear there would be no violation of laid down norms if the shop was opened. TASMAC officials said the shop would function from the same location and sales would commence with immediate effect.
